Irritated skin is symptom of dermatitis like conditions such as eczema which causes an inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. Eczema refers to a range of recurring or persistent skin rashes which are characterised by redness, itching and irritated skin. It can also be caused by sunburn from excess exposure to the sun.
Irritated skin occurs with atopic eczema, an hereditary condition often linked with hay fever or asthma and more noticeable on the face, scalp, neck, behind the elbows and knees and on the buttocks.
Contact dermatitis, or eczema, causes irritated skin from exposure to irritants or allergens (something you are allergic to). The symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis are red, swollen and itchy skin caused by contact with an irritant such as soap, chemicals or detergent.
Allergen Contact Dermatitis, a form of eczema, which results in irritated skin is caused by contact with allergens such as rubber, hair dye or nickel, a compound commonly found in jewellery. The main way to prevent irritated skin and rashes from eczema-like conditions is to avoid contact with the allergen and seek medical help.
The most effective treatment for irritated skin from eczema or dermatitis relies on moisturising products, 'emollients'. These keep the affected area moisturised, trapping moisture and alleviating the severe dryness associated with eczema and dermatitis. Emollient oils can be used whilst bathing and showering followed by the appropriate creams or lotions.
