Nursing discomfort is a common result of breastfeeding an infant because it causes a continual loss of moisture that often results in delicate skin that can be sore, dry, and cracked.
When a woman first starts nursing (breastfeeding) the nipples can become extremely painful as a result of cracking and fissures in the skin or swelling around the nipples. These symptoms of nursing discomfort usually start when a woman starts nursing and generally subside after about 5 days. The pain should subside after this time as the women becomes more accustomed to nursing. If pain continues it is advisable to get advice to ensure that the correct technique is being employed or that there is not infection.
Rich emollient Nursing creams, used between feeds create a protective barrier that locks in moisture, soothe cracks and fissures, speed healing, and prevent outside irritants from causing further nursing discomfort.
