Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloids are firm rubbery lesions or shiny fibrous nodules which vary from flesh coloured, or pink to red or dark brown. Keloids are benign and non-contagious but also accompanied by sharp pains, severe itchiness and changes in texture.
Keloids can occur as a result of severe acne or chickepox scarring or injury at a scar site. They can also occur where the skin is pierced or even from a pimple or scratch. This probably accounts why the incidence of keloids is greater in young women than in males. Keloids are also more likely in highly pigmented people.
No treatment for keloids is considered to be 100% effective as any interference with the original keloid can actually make it more likely to recur and enlarge. Attempts to treat keloid might include the use of surgery, dressings, steroid injections, compression bandages, cryosurgery, radiation or laser therapy and newer drug treatments. Consult your doctor first.
Our product range aims to soften and alleviate the hardness associated with keloids but they cannot be viewed as a treatment. See our range here.
