In-grown hairs occur when the hair shaft curls back or grows sideways back into the skin causing a red rash, itching or the hair remains despite shaving. It is sometimes accompanied by infection of the hair follicle (folliculitis) or from shaving (pseudofolliculitis barbae). In-grown hairs are usually the result of shaving the beard or legs but can occur anywhere on the body. Tight clothes can be another cause.
In-grown hairs can be treated by removing the ingrown hair with tweezers, allowing the hair to grow out, shaving in a different direction or using razors that leave the hair longer. Exfoliating using facial scrubs and creams or applying topical medications can reduce the occurrence of in-grown hairs.
