Dandruff refers to the excessive shedding of dead cells from the scalp. It is normal for skin cells to flake off as they die and this process usually takes around one month to occur. Dandruff sufferers shed dead cells every 2 - 7 days often in oily clumps which then appear as white or greyish patches on the scalp or clothes.
Dandruff is sometimes called scurf and it can be a symptom of more serious conditions such as seborrhioeic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infection or head lice infestation.
Treatment for dandruff requires more frequent washing using shampoos with active ingredients that help restore the normal balance to the skin and prevent flakes from reforming. These products include zinc pyrithone, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, tea tree oil or tar.
