Alopecia is the hair loss on areas of the body usually from the scalp. Alopecia initially causes bald spots on the head however in 1-2% of cases the condition spreads to the entire scalp - 'alopecia areata totalis'. When hair loss is restricted to one spot it is known as 'alopecia areata monolocularis'.
Alopecia is thought to be caused by autoimmune disease which makes the body think of its hair follicles as foreign tissue and then supresses or prevents hair growth.
Approximately 50% of all alopecia sufferers hair wiill regrow in one year without treatment. If the affected region is small. However, the treatment of severe alopecia - hair loss can be attempted utilising steroid injections, medications such as minoxidil, anthralin or topical coal tar or topical cylosporine.
